How Many Times A Week Should You Lift?

Written March 31st, 2006 by Tobias in Field Figures, Workouts

Bodybuilding Legend David Draper takes a look at frequency of workout in his latest weekly column:

Some things you can’t abbreviate, rush or combine. Time takes time. Healthy musclebuilding, like birth, can’t be accelerated. The process moves along at its natural designated pace. You just apply the physics and go, little darlin’.

One day a week at the gym and under the iron is not worth much. If you’ve trained before it will keep you in touch and prevent a nasty training gap from becoming an abyss, and, thus, surely save your bottom. It can also be a fun and fulfilling blast of time, but as far as building real muscle — forget it.

David Draper

Written March 14th, 2006 by Tobias in Field Figures

Back in the 60s and 70s David Draper was one of the well known and very visible kings of bodybuilding. At his site, David Draper.com, you find out that Dave is still working out hard, and has a wealth of advice and resources available for anyone to poke around and read.

Arguably the most interesting section of the site is Dave’s weekly columns. They range from advice on lifting weights for all sorts of people, from beginner to advanced, to inspiring anecdotes about his own past and being a part of the west coast bodybuilding scene, to his own daily workouts.

A sample from his latest:

Many shiny faces at gyms try for reasons less than solid and sincere: profit, vanity, domination, attention, fear, companionship, distraction. They bravely chose a rough and productive road of travel, but will they endure? That is the question. Enduring is the test of the best. There’s a very good chance — cross your fingers — they’ll be duly challenged and disciplined, respond favorably to the demands and grow strong in many responsible ways. A real gym does that to a person.
