If you want to improve your listening skills, then you’re going to have to listen. It’s not actually hard to do, but you need to make an effort to concentrate on what the person is actually saying.

At some point in our lives we’ve developed poor listening skills by doing some of the things listed below:

1. Listening but not hearing
2. Getting distracted easily by other things.
3. Pretending to be listening.
4. We don’t hear what we think we heard.
5. We jump to put in our opinion without listening to the other person.

These are very common mistakes when it comes to listening. You can fix them however, it just takes practice and a focused effort. Here’s what you can do:

1. Force yourself to pay attention – even if the speaker is boring.
2. Listen to what is being said even if you don’t want to.
3. Try not to draw a conclusion before listening to the other person.
4. If you are unsure of what they said, ask them to confirm it.

The more you practice your listening skills the better you will become, it just takes time and effort.
