My sister is a chocoholic. She just can’t seem to get enough of the stuff. That’s fine with me, but when she started spouting off about how healthy chocolate is, I decided I needed to do some research and see what I could find out.
The best information I found was this article, Dark Chocolate Health Benefits.
This is what I found out:
- All of the research studies that have been done on the health benefits of chocolate have been paid for by companies in the chocolate industry
- All of the research studies were done on very small groups of people. According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, there were only a total of 78 people involved in the 3 studies their publication has published.
- The heart health and antioxidant benefits that researchers found were attributed only to dark chocolate - not milk chocolate or white chocolate.
So my sister’s claims of “eating healthy” while she stuffs Snicker’s bars in her mouth are totally unfounded. However, if she starts adding unsweetened cocoa powder to her diet, she may start to see some benefits.
