Can you imagine living in a society where people’s wages were based on their weight? Sounds crazy, doesn’t it?
Well, according to the American Obesity Association, we’re living in that kind of society right now.
According to their research, women who are mildly obese make 5.9% less than their peers and women who are morbidly obese (100 or more pounds overweight) make 24.1% less. Things are different for men, with the pay differences showing up only at the very highest weight levels.
So if you’re a morbidly obese female professional making $75,000, your weight is costing you $23,814 a year. Who knew it was so expensive to be overweight?
If you’ve been a victim of weight discrimination, unless you live in Michigan, you’re pretty much out of luck. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 does not specify weight as a protected characteristic, so there’s no protection for you there. Michigan is the only state that prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of weight.
