handAs the weather warms up – it was 90 degrees here in North Carolina today – there are a couple of things you should look out for if you want to stay healthy.

Here are my safe summer health tips:

  • Drink at least eight 8 oz. glasses of water every day. Stay away from drinks that contain caffeine, alcohol, or large amounts of sugar.
  • Wear sunscreen if you’re going to be outdoors during the highest UV times of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There were more than a million cases of skin cancer diagnosed last year, so be sure to play it safe. If your skin is very fair or sensitive, in addition to sunscreen you can also wear long sleeves and long pants.
  • Wear loose fitting, lightweight clothing. Light colors are cooler.
  • Don’t exercise or do strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day. Dehydration can occur quickly when the temperatures and humidity are high.
  • Remember food safety when you’re grilling out. Use a meat thermometer to be sure your grilled meats are completely cooked.
