Living la vida low carb is righteously angry about the FDA’s refusal to study Stevia so that it can be used as a sweetener in drinks and foods in the US.
Stevia is used in Japan and is processed from the plant that is naturally sweet, and it is the dominant non-sugar sweetener in Japan. But in the US, oddly enough, the FDA refuses to study it or put it through an approval cycle, though it has rushed through Splenda and other sweeteners. Odd.
I have a box of Stevia, as well as Splenda, and Stevia seems to work pretty well for drinks, though I have yet to bake with it.
