2nd Wind Exercise takes a closer look at the growing popularity of elliptical trainers.
The most obvious benefit is that unlike the treadmill or running, the elliptical gives you a good cardio burn with low impact. You won’t be replacing knees after several years of using one of these!

05|Jun|2006 1I’ve tried the elliptical trainers, but I have a wacky equilibrium and get dizzy & unbalanced when I’m on them. I have to hang on pretty tight to treadmills too.
I was pretty disappointed — they look fun.

07|Jun|2006 2I have trouble with them too, and I’m young enough I don’t mind pounding the knees a bit
I like the step machine more than the elliptical, which I’ve fallen off of before!
Eh... not so much
08|Jun|2006 3Hey, just FYI: I had twisted my knee last April, and I tried going on the elliptical because I thought it would be low-impact. It actually made my knee worse. My chiropractor said that for people who are 5′7″ (like me) and shorter, the elliptical is not actually good because it puts your knees and quads in a funny angle. (Something called the “Q angle,” you can Google or A9.com it for more info) All I know is, I used to have knee blowouts fairly regularly while I used an elliptical. I haven’t been on one since last April, and my knees are fine *knocks on wood*.
