The usually political oriented blog The Moderate Voice has an interesting post about the FDA’s decision to try and downsize portion sizes by talking it over with restaurants.
It is something we’ve covered here at Healthacker, that portion sizes are part of the problem. Eric Schlosser in Fast Food Nation took a look at average portion sizes from the 50s through now, and they’ve pretty much tripled. It’s a hard habit to learn to monitor what you’re eating when you’re more focused on being out with friends, or in a social setting, and most people are trained as kids to finish off their plate. Habits are hard to break.
It’s great to see the FDA realizing what a huge problem this is. But is top down government intervention really the right answer?
