High fructose corn syrup = evil

It’s everywhere you don’t expect it to be. High fructose corn syrup is the sweetener of choice in most things you encounter, rather than actual sugar. And it has increased the amount of empty calories Americans consume every day:
HFCS has not replaced sugar consumption in the US, it has merely added to it. In other words, not only are we consuming the same amount of sugars we did 20 years ago, we’ve added HFCS consumption on top of it.
And it’s sadly almost impossible to avoid.
